Understanding Website Hosting
OK, so you’ve got (or are about to get) a beautiful website – full of interesting content, fabulous images and is functionally a delight for your visitors. However, how do you get this website on the world wide web?
This is where web hosting comes in to play. In order for your website to be accessible to other web users you’ll need to hire a “web host” to store your site on their servers.
What we have done, to save you the hassle, is scoured the web to find the best hosting companies out there. We’ve researched all the technical stuff that sorts the good from the bad and provided the information in the table above.
The beauty of web hosts is they can host companies worldwide. Many of the big names in the UK hosting market are American companies, but the internet is global and as a precondition, we’ve only featured companies who offer support around the clock to ensure regardless of time zones, you can gain support 24/7.
But what do those technical details mean? Click each tab below to learn more.
Why Do I Need Storage For My Website?
As we’ve already covered, when you hire a web host you’re in effect renting storage space on their servers. Your website is typically made up of text, images and multimedia (video or audio) and depending on the amount of each you use dictates the size of the website. It goes without saying the more images and particularly videos you use the bigger the website is.
The amount of space the web hosting company will allocate you varies from company to company. It’s well worth remembering if you have a blogging or ecommerce website that your website will grow as blogs and products are added.
Most of the companies we’ve reviewed offer ‘Unlimited’ Storage but be aware – this is subject to a fair usage policy! If you’re running anything more significant than a small business or personal website you run the risk of exceeding that policy.
What Is Bandwidth & How Will It Affect My Site?
Web hosting companies refer to Bandwidth as the amount of data that can be transferred from your website. In essence, it is how much traffic is supported.
Without getting too technical, when someone logs onto your site a data transfer takes place from the host’s server to the visitor’s computer/smartphone. The bandwidth your hosting company has provided will dictate how much data is able to transfer each month. Ergo, if you’ve a particularly busy month you run the risk of extra charges if you go over your allowance – in a similar way to if you exceed the data limit on your mobile contract.
It is worth noting that bandwidth also refers to the speed which the data is transferred from the server to the user. In most cases, the higher the bandwidth, the faster the data is transferred. However, the quality of a user’s internet connection can impact on bandwidth in the same way a hosting companies server does.
What’s A Domain Name & Why I Need One?
A domain name is the information that internet users enter into the address bar to view your website. In order to use a domain name you’ll need to obtain it (obviously!) and this is an area most web hosts assist you.
Typically a hosting package will see the hosting company offer you a free domain name as part of that package. Be sure to check if you will then own the domain and if the domain renewal fees (typically due 12 months later) will be your responsibility.
Different packages also offer the ability to include subdomains. Subdomains allow you to include variations of the main Domain Name. For example (www.example.com can include a subdomain such as shop.example.com)
The Ability To Create Professional Business Email Accounts
Nothing creates a professional look like having a personalised email account. It subconsciously builds trust amongst your clients when they are emailing an address such as [email protected] rather than [email protected]
Different hosting packages include different amounts of email accounts you can create based on your domain. Not only accounts, some limit how much storage you can use. So, if you’re anticipating hundreds of emails every day it’s well worth looking for unlimited storage on your email servers to prevent issues when your accounts are full.
All web hosts offer at least 1 email account with the package. Consider how many accounts you will need. If you’re a small business are you looking for individual accounts for each employee?
How Does My Host’s Performance Affect The Speed Of My Site?
Load time of webpages is measured in milliseconds and we’ve sourced the average page load speed time offered by the hosting companies. Bottom line is, the less time it takes a page to load, the better.
Load time in milliseconds may not be noticeable to you or your visitors – data usually transfers at the speed of light. But Google and other search engines do record the load time of your website and it’s pages. And Google takes load time into account through it’s algorithms to determine ranking.
Therefore, load time not only impacts your visitor’s likelihood to stay on your website, (studies show the average web user abandons a website if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load – the patience of modern society!) but poor loading speeds can have a seriously detrimental impact on your SEO strategy.
Will My Site Be Available For Visitors To View 24/7?
From time to time all web servers are unavailable and during these time periods your website will be offline too! Not good! It is a huge point and almost all web hosts claim to offer over 99% uptime. In practice some are better than others.
All servers will go offline from time to time even if for maintenance purposes, but if you’re hosting company are going down regularly your website which you’ve worked hard to create isn’t there for the world to see and it will cost you customers.
We’ve used numerous resources to find an average level of uptime amongst our Top 10, and it plays a huge role in whether we feel the host are value for money.
How Will The Server’s Details Affect My Website?
An IP address (Internet Protocol) is numerical data that basically allows computers to communicate with a server. Both a computer (or indeed a smartphone) is allocated an IP address, and when you type a Domain name into it is converted to the numerical number matching the IP address of the server hosting said Domain.
Each server has an individual IP address, meaning if you choose a Shared Hosting plan your website will share it’s IP address with other sites.
A simple way of thinking about it – imagine living in an apartment in a converted house. Said house has the same address and all the apartments share this, whereas if you live in the whole house the address is unique to you.
